Audi Fashion Festival Singapore (18 May 2012)

Previously,
TPS and I ravaged the Brandery Asia fashion shows in Blueprint Tradeshow on 18 May 2012. We had our fun and decided to keep the exuberance going!

TPS was extremely persuasive that day. He was successful at coaxing me to join him for the Audi Fashion Festival in the heart of the city for the 5pm fashion show. As we ended our visit at Blueprint Tradeshow, TPS and I grabbed a quick bite and plunged straight into the showcase (with some external help and some quick witted moves).
Audi Fashion Runway Show was on a completely different scale compared to the tradeshow runway show. As we entered the marquee, I felt the instant glamour and sophistication in the atmosphere. People clad in chic and elegant outfit, standing in small clusters on the red carpet, holding Black 28, making small talks and taking flattering photos. With what we were wearing (nothing suave at all), I felt immensely awkward. It was a really weird sensation to be standing amongst the crowd of the fashion industry. Well, I did try my best to be as classy as I could.

The seat ushering began shortly after we arrived. As we got seats in the Fashion show, we shuffled into the show sprightly. Exhilarated, we knew that the evening runway was presenting three amazing local brands – Saturday, Depression and A.W.O.L (All walks of Life).

With all the high anticipation, Saturday instigated the fashion show with a legion of models marching out under dim lights. The Fall/ Winter series 2012 for Saturday displayed an array of loose and sleek looking womenswear in shades of gold, bronze, blue, black and grey. I was particularly perceptive of the way they knotted their scarves and the tribal looking neck accessories, which were all androgynously suitable for both sexes.  I feel that the label is portraying a practical approach on modern women outfit yet retaining a sense of refinement. It is definitely a fashion brand to look out in the industry.

Second up in line was Depression. I admit that I lived in a well because I have failed to realize this amazing brand name in the fashion market. Depression presented a wide spectrum of designs for both male and female. The Autumn/ Winter collection 2012 or branded as “Plastic Surgery” featured a rock (metal spikes) and post apocalyptic look (shambles of clothes draping loosely) on its black, blue and white outfit. The concept was, of course, to define plastic surgery in the view of the designers. Apparently, the clothing in this series is detachable to allow variation in a single piece. I was (and still am) in love with the black bowler’s hate with metal spikes and my personal favourite is the white long loose sleeves with black pants. But, the real show stealer was the black women’s capeline studded with metal spikes. As the model strode down the runway, I could hear whisperings of “oooh…” and “ah...”. Honestly, I was utterly astounded by the boldness and aesthetic sense in their AW 2012 series. Rest assured that I will be frequenting their store in Cineleisure Orchard.

The fashion runway show ended on a brilliant note with designs from A.W.O.L. The Fall/ Winter 2012 series for the brand starred studded bandeu bonnets and kaleidoscopic or wispy lined patterned silk pieces with fleece or silk coats. I loved the intricate linings and details the collection was presenting in gold, black and white, beautifully blended with the glamorous sheen of the material. I think that the series exhibited a sophisticated sense of grace and demeanour. In spite of that, I felt that the collection will be a tad bit harder to mash up, as the patterned pieces are lined heavily. Unfortunately, this means that the outstanding pieces are more difficult to carry, so not everyone can wear them well. Still, all in all, A.W.O.L. really pushed up the bar for creativity in women’s fashion (which I know so little about) to a whole new level.

The show ended around 7pm, leaving us completely gratifying and famished. I have learnt a great deal and left with wonderful memories. I hope this article could share some of the sensation I had experienced with you. Do let us know if you have any opinions on this runway show. We would love to read them!

Until then, au revoir!

Brandery Asia @ Blueprint Tradeshow (18 May 2012)

After regrettably missing out on the Men’s Fashion Week, I was determined to get into the upcoming showcase presenting fashion works from both foreign and local labels into the Asian market. Then, I found out about Blueprint. (For more information on Blueprint, check out their webpage at blueprint.sg)

To be honest, this was my first preview of an industry-only showcase. So, I was thrilled at the entire prospect, yet, felt immensely timid at the thought of it. Thankfully, it was incredible timing that a close friend of mine –TPS (who also writes blogs) was able to accompany me to the tradeshow. We anticipated two of the few fashion runway shows displaying the latest 2012/2013 collections of some brilliant Asia fashion brands.

As we arrived at the showcase, I was fluttered with excitement. There were rows and rows of booths parading myriads of the latest and upcoming fashion treasures (for both men and women)!! Even though I don’t usually pay heed to women’s fashion, I was, nonetheless, astounded with the racks of beautiful gowns, casual wears, formal wears and accessories that lay before my eyes.

As we steered towards the runway, we bumped into some of TPS’s fashion friends. He amicably introduced me to them and we exchanged words courteously. They were all surprisingly friendly and down-to-earth. Generous with their kind compliments, I felt completely welcomed into the scene.

We watched two fashion shows in the Tradeshow, featuring collections from Alleira (Jakarta, Indonesia), Toton (Jakarta, Indonesia) and S.Nine (Hong Kong). Each label displayed different designs from warm asymmetrical patterns to stark embroideries on sleek cuttings to crisscross and romantic womenswear. It was a first for me in witnessing women’s fashion runway show up front. I was enthralled by the tall slim models. TPS seemed to be thoroughly engrossed in it as well.

It all comes down to detailed embroidery with Toton's collection

Navy Blue Bag from 72 Smalldive caught my eyes immediately
In Brandery Asia Tradeshow, we also glossed over some of the wonderful collections for labels displayed at the booths. I was hooked over some of 72 Smalldive’s minimalist concept fleece bags and Jason’s series of Casual Street wears.  I think Jason’s design brought out an elegant cooper brown assemblage, bringing out a classy yet relaxed demeanour about it. The collection did not seem too thick or heavy at all.  I would love to see it up close. Unfortunately, the promoter was too busy catering to a buyer who was frantically scavenging every piece of the collection off the rack.

Aside from the young brands in the local market, I set my eyes on some of the established brands located just outside the center.  N. Tyler’s preppy collection really reminded me of Great Britain with their knit coats and bowler’s hats. I thought it really suited TPS’s taste and image. He seemed to love it exceptionally. I could literally see the flash in TPS’s eyes (He was also very verbal about it).  Flesh Imp is also one of my favourites in Brandery Asia with its boxed shirts and canvas sneakers. Everything in the collection suits TPS. It was all for his sake and he seemed very pleased.

After stalking the event for a good two hours, we left the showcase feeling satisfied and wonderful. Overall, I really enjoyed Brandery Asia at Blueprint, albeit I did not reveal too much expression (self-acting bored-looking fashionista). I wish the promoters at each individual booth would put on a more welcoming facade as they merely dwell in their booths and hinder (deliberately or unintentionally) our entry to the racks of beautiful clothes. Nonetheless, it was an amazing experience, meeting two lovely ladies and I was glad to be able to share the whole experience with TPS!!!  Do check out his views on the event as well at thepotionshop.blogspot.com!!!

Also, I am intrigued to know if any of you went to the Brandery Asia Tradeshow or Emporium. Do let me know of your experience!

Prelude to Part 2 –

“It was crazy!! I can’t believe we actually got in!”

“Yes!”

I can’t believe it… The people of the industry mingled in their gorgeous stilettos and suave coats, holding a glass of champagne in one hand. Find out where we went next!!

Art of Confidence

Understand this, “Confidence is self gained, not god given.” People are not born with self-confidence, we build it upon a long process called life experiences - by broadening our mind and filling it with all the goodness that we are.  The situations we experience, the things we do and the people we meet may affect us, but, ultimately, it is up to us how we assess ourselves. Everyone craves for self-confidence. It is a positive belief that makes us feel great about ourselves. So, how do we get the confidence we need?

My answer is simple – “find something that you like about yourself (or you think you’re capable at), accept its goodness and transcend”. If you can’t seem to think of any, be open-minded and delve into new things! I once advised a friend to explore into different stuffs, and he denied of having any interest in attempting. I scoffed at his “effort” to gain self confidence, but his thinking did pose to me an egg-or-chicken question. Without self confidence, he can’t seem to accomplish anything. On the other hand, if he does nothing, chances of him gaining confidence through self-reflection will be really low. It is a vicious cycle and we have to BREAK it! One can always do something, no matter how miniscule it is. So, start something - anything! In fact, it doesn’t matter which (the egg or the chicken) should come first. If you have an egg, hatch a chicken! If you have a chicken, then hatch an egg!

Nobody said gaining confidence is easy. I used to have (and still have a little) low self-esteem. The self-confidence I have now did not happen overnight and certainly did not transpire out of the blue! In the past, I was skeptical, about EVERYTHING! I wouldn’t believe in anyone, not even myself. I scorned when people praised me. It was simply daunting to believe that I was decent at anything. Most of the time, I hated myself in the mirror. It went really depressing for a moment, until I decided that if I don’t like what I see, I have to change it. So, I started making an effort to look attractive. It took 7 long years to finally graduate into the person I am now (and still growing). My journey has not ended, but I made my first steps. I have grown to accept myself and the way I look.

I believe that the value of an image should solely be determined by us. If you want to shine, make the first move by getting something that will look great on you and represents who you are. If you don’t know how to pick up something fine, you can always ask the help of your fashionable friends. If you don’t have such friends, then do homework - study fashion magazines and trusty blogs such as mines (shameless advertising). Pick out things that you like with the tips you learnt from these articles. Above all, please wear them out!! Start with your friends, and if you get compliments, take it further into the public! If they say no, ask them why and make a reasonable change.  My first advice would be to put practicality in your style.  For example, coats and sweaters won’t last a minute under the outdoor heat.

Note: You might also want to clean up your looks – neat hairdo, pristine skin, fitting bod and a dazzling white smile.

These are some of my thoughts on being confident in your life and your appearance. Allow me to end the article with a brilliant quote -”Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy. - Dale Carnegie”

Basic Shoes Picking 101

When I posted a photo of myself stalking a recently launched fashion collection, a number of my friends prodded me about my handsome new shoes, instead of the clothing line that I was reviewing! The continuous chain of interest on my shoes became the spark of inspiration that motivated me to write about footwear.  I may not be an expert on shoes, but here are some of my takes on picking the right shoes for you.
1.  Walkability
Honestly, I made the word up. It defines the ability of a person to walk in a pair of shoes. It may sound ridiculous like asking you to breathe to keep yourself alive, but, often, this is very much neglected.
A pair of shoes should never bite, hurt, scratch, or kill your feet. I love shoes that snug nicely around your feet.
Size is everything. We all presume we know what that means, but most of us are actually oblivious. I’d always allow at least a thumb width space in front of my toes for them to twitch, bend and breathe.
Padded insoles, heels and cushioned collar will also provide your precious feet comfort. Remember, you'll be walking in them for a long time, and a pair of painful feet will create a grumpy soul.
Comfort is everything, so make sure to try them on by walking in them before making the purchase.
 2. Flexibility
I am not asking your shoes to perform yoga or a circus act. A pair of good shoes should at least be flexible enough for your feet to bend or turn when you walk.
Additional bonus points will be given to shoes that don’t bend much at the vamp/arc because this will create those ugly crease lines you usually see in worn-out shoes.

Leather Blucher from D&C - classy but less dressy, making it perfect for both formal and casual occassion

3.   Light as Feather
That would be ideal. Given the amount of time you'll be walking in those shoes, you don't need two bricks attached on your poor feet.
Certain shoes like travelling boots may be heavier, to provide proper protection. However, under usual circumstances, try not to get heavy shoes. As Lady Gaga once sang, "Don't be a drag...” heavy shoes will only drag you down. Keep them light.

Sport sneakers from Nike - very light and nicely padded to absorb sweat and provide cushion when walking

4.   Durability
Enough said. If it is made for men, it should be made tough. A good pair of walking shoes can last at least a year, in mint condition, given a normal usage of the shoes.
High quality leather and non-woven materials are pretty long-lasting. Depending on the material of the lateral or vamp of the shoes, I believe some shoe materials like petrochemical and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are durable to scratches and stains. Meanwhile, leather is less resistant towards scratches and suede can actually be easily stained over time.

Note: Some materials tend to change colour when exposed to water. I once bought a pair of hazel brown leather blucher that I was proud of, until they turned into hideous water stained creatures, when exposed to drops of water. Of course, they returned to handsome looking shoes once they’ve dried, but they shall never again see water!
.
5.   5. Fashion

As a guy, I love to keep my shoes simple. Personally, I’d pick a basic colour that would fit most, if not all, my outfits. The spectrum of choice here is vast as the combination of material, colour and design of the shoes should be taken into consideration for the style you wish to convey.
As a baseline standard, I think every man should have at least a pair of good leather shoes, walking sneakers, casual sandals or slippers and athletic shoes.
There you have it! Five fundamental 101 guidelines to picking a pair of shoes that will suit you! Even though the pointers that I give may be a little scarce, I hope you will find this useful and all the best in hunting for the shoes, best suited for you!
